Set in the 1970s, 'Uncle Frank' follows the story of Frank Bledsoe, a literature professor living in New York City. Frank is a closeted gay man who has been estranged from his conservative Southern family for many years. When Frank's father, Daddy Mac, unexpectedly passes away, he is forced to return to his hometown of Creekville, South Carolina, for the funeral. Reluctantly, Frank brings along his 18-year-old niece, Beth, who is fiercely independent and idolizes her uncle. As they embark on the road trip from New York to South Carolina, Frank is confronted with painful memories from his past, including the trauma of growing up in a homophobic environment and the loss of his first love, Wally. Throughout the journey, Frank and Beth bond over their shared experiences of feeling like outsiders in their own family. In Creekville, they are met with the disapproval of Frank's family members, especially his judgmental and controlling mother, Mammaw. Despite the challenges, Frank finds unexpected support from his outspoken and free-spirited sister, and Beth discovers a newfound sense of belonging and acceptance. As the family confronts their long-held secrets and resentments, Frank is finally able to come to terms with his past and embrace his true identity. 'Uncle Frank' is a touching and poignant story about love, acceptance, and the courage to live authentically in the face of adversity.
