Set in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955, 'The Long Walk Home' tells the story of two women, Odessa Cotter, an African American maid, and Miriam Thompson, her white employer. The film is set against the backdrop of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. When the African American community in Montgomery boycotts the city buses in response to the arrest of Rosa Parks, Miriam finds herself caught between her loyalty to her social circle and her growing empathy for the plight of African Americans. As the boycott stretches on, Odessa, who walks a long distance to and from work each day, and Miriam forge a deep bond. Miriam becomes increasingly disillusioned with the racial prejudice and discrimination that she witnesses, and she decides to support the boycott, much to the dismay of her husband and friends. As tensions rise in the city, the women's friendship is put to the test. Despite facing backlash and threats, they remain resolute in their commitment to the civil rights cause. The film culminates in a powerful and emotional depiction of the impact of the Montgomery Bus Boycott on both the individual lives of Odessa and Miriam, and the broader struggle for racial equality in America.
