In the 1950s, in the midst of racial tension and cultural shifts, the lives of a diverse group of individuals intersect in the neighborhood of Liberty Heights in Baltimore. The Kurtzmans, a Jewish family, navigate the challenges of assimilation and discrimination as they try to achieve the American dream. The eldest son, Van, falls in love with a African American girl, leading to conflict and introspection within the family. Meanwhile, their neighbor, the black family of the Stokes, faces their own struggles with inequality and social injustice. As the characters grapple with identity, love, and the pursuit of acceptance, Liberty Heights becomes a microcosm of the complex and evolving American society of the era.
