Set in 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the movie follows the true story of John Rabe, a German businessman who is the head of the Siemens branch in Nanjing, China. As the Japanese army invades Nanjing, Rabe uses his influence and connections to establish a safety zone in the city to protect Chinese civilians from the brutalities of the Japanese military. Despite facing opposition from the Japanese authorities, Rabe and his colleagues, including his Chinese assistant Tang and American doctor Robert Wilson, work tirelessly to provide shelter, food, and medical aid to the thousands of refugees seeking refuge in the safety zone. As the situation in Nanjing becomes increasingly dire, Rabe's moral courage and determination are put to the test as he risks his own safety to stand up against the atrocities committed by the Japanese forces. The movie depicts the harrowing experiences of the civilians trapped in the war-torn city and the unwavering resilience of Rabe and his team as they struggle to maintain hope and humanity in the face of unimaginable horrors. Despite the overwhelming odds, Rabe's efforts ultimately save the lives of thousands of innocent people, making him a hero in the eyes of the Chinese people and a symbol of compassion and solidarity in the midst of war.
