The Dark Horse is a powerful and inspiring true story based on the life of Genesis 'Gen' Potini, a former speed-chess champion who overcame personal struggles to mentor a group of at-risk New Zealand youth. Gen, a Maori man, is battling bipolar disorder and finds himself living on the streets. With the help of his estranged brother, Ariki, Gen is given a chance to get back on his feet. He turns to the game of chess, a game he has always excelled at, to find purpose and meaning in his life. Gen forms a chess club for disadvantaged kids in his community, teaching them the game and using it as a tool to instill confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging in the kids. As Gen and the kids prepare for a major chess tournament, they face numerous challenges and obstacles, including the pressures of the competition and the temptations of the streets. Gen's unorthodox teaching methods and his own personal struggles make for a dramatic and emotional journey as he and the kids strive for success both on and off the chessboard. The Dark Horse is a story of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of mentorship and community support.
