Citizen X is a gripping crime drama based on the true story of the Soviet Union's most prolific serial killer, Andrei Chikatilo. Set in the 1980s, the film follows a dedicated detective, Viktor Burakov, as he is assigned to lead the investigation into a series of gruesome murders of young boys and girls in the Rostov region. The case becomes increasingly challenging as the killer's brutal and sadistic methods continue to baffle the authorities. Burakov is determined to catch the elusive killer, but the Soviet bureaucracy and lack of resources hinder the investigation. As the body count rises and the public becomes increasingly fearful, Burakov faces pressure from his superiors to solve the case quickly. With the help of forensic expert Dr. Alexandr Bukhanovsky, Burakov begins to unravel the twisted mind of the killer and piece together crucial evidence. However, the investigation takes a toll on Burakov's personal and professional life, as he becomes consumed by the pursuit of justice. As the hunt for the killer intensifies, Burakov and his team face numerous setbacks and false leads. Eventually, they narrow down their search and apprehend Chikatilo, who is revealed to be a mild-mannered family man with a dark and depraved alter ego. The film delves into the psychological and emotional impact of the case on Burakov and Bukhanovsky, as they grapple with the horrors they have witnessed. Citizen X is a chilling and thought-provoking portrayal of a real-life criminal investigation that captures the dedication and perseverance of law enforcement in the face of unimaginable evil.
