Set in 1665 during the Great Plague and the witch hunts in England, The Reckoning follows the story of Grace Haverstock, a young widow who is falsely accused of being a witch after rejecting the advances of her landlord, Squire Pendleton. Grace's husband had succumbed to the plague, leaving her to fend for herself and her infant daughter. When Squire Pendleton forces himself on Grace and she fights back, he accuses her of witchcraft in retaliation. Grace is arrested and imprisoned, awaiting trial for her alleged crimes. As she languishes in a filthy and oppressive jail, she befriends another prisoner, a woman named Ursula, who has also been accused of witchcraft. Together, they endure the horrors of their confinement and the vicious treatment at the hands of their jailers. Determined to prove her innocence and seek justice, Grace faces the ultimate challenge as she battles the malevolent forces that seek to destroy her. With the help of a sympathetic innkeeper, Joseph, Grace manages to escape and goes on the run. However, her freedom is short-lived as Squire Pendleton and his men relentlessly pursue her, intent on silencing her and ensuring that she does not expose the truth. Along the way, Grace encounters a group of rebels who are fighting against the tyranny and injustice of the witch trials. She joins forces with them, and together they plan to overthrow the corrupt authorities and bring an end to the witch hunts. As Grace's journey unfolds, she uncovers the dark secrets and twisted motivations behind the accusations of witchcraft, ultimately confronting the true evil that has plagued her community. In a climactic showdown, Grace faces Squire Pendleton and the forces of darkness, and she must summon all her strength and courage to fight for her life and the future of her daughter. The Reckoning is a gripping tale of resilience, empowerment, and the fight for justice in the face of oppression and persecution.
